The Honorable Donna S. Stroud is a North Carolina Court of Appeals Judge who has served there since 2007, including as Chief Judge from 2021 through 2023. Prior to joining the Court, she was a District Court Judge in Wake County. Judge Stroud has taught at Campbell University School of Law as an Adjunct Professor since 2008. She served on the Family Court Advisory Commission from 2017 until 2024. Judge Stroud holds a J.D. from Campbell University School of Law and an L.L.M. in Judicial Studies from Duke University School of Law.

Cheryl Howell

Cheryl Howell is an attorney with the North Carolina School of Government since 1992. Ms. Howell teaches, consults, and writes about family law and other issues, and she works with the NC Association of District Court Judges and the North Carolina Judicial College in planning and coordinating judicial branch education programs. She serves as a member of the Family Court Advisory Committee and the NC Child Custody and Visitation Mediation Advisory Committee. Her publications include articles and bulletins relating to family law and family court and chapters created for the Trial Judges’ Bench Book, District Court Edition. She holds a J.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Nichole P. McLaughlin

Nichole P. McLaughlin has been employed as a staff attorney with the North Carolina State Bar since June 2004. Originally from New Jersey, she graduated from Drew University with a B.A. in English. Ms. McLaughlin obtained her J.D. from Seton Hall University School of Law. As Assistant Ethics Counsel, she gives informal ethics advice to lawyers about their own future conduct via telephone or email, prepares formal ethics opinions, and advises the Ethics Committee. Ms. McLaughlin is also the Judicial District Bar Liaison, a role created to improve communication between the State Bar and judicial district bars. She has also taught Professional Responsibility at North Carolina Central School of Law. Prior to joining the Bar, Ms. McLaughlin was in private practice for five years with Donaldson & Black, P.A., in Greensboro, and handled asbestos workers’ compensation cases. In 2021, she became an Adjunct Professor at North Carolina Central University School of Law and teaches Professional Responsibility with a Technology Focus.
